Plants Winter Survival Guide

Winter Survival Guide

1. Sauron – Calathea ‘Black Rose’ (4”)

  • Light: Low to medium light is fine indoors; avoid drafts and heaters.

  • Water: Keep soil lightly moist, not soggy. Reduce slightly compared to summer.

  • Humidity: Mist occasionally or use a tray with water + pebbles.

  • Tip: Keep away from cold windows; this keeps the leaves deep black.

2. Gollum – Lithops aucampiae (2”)

  • Dormancy: Winter is natural dormancy; do not water or very minimally.

  • Light: Place in a bright window.

  • Tip: Avoid letting soil stay damp; Lithops are happiest bone dry during winter.

3. Gandalf – Tillandsia xerographica (6”)

  • Water: Mist 2–3 times per week, or soak 20–30 minutes every 2–3 weeks.

  • Light: Bright indirect light; avoid very dim corners.

  • Airflow: Good ventilation is key—don’t box it in.

4. Galadriel – Tillandsia caput-medusae (5”)

  • Same as Gandalf: mist regularly, bright indirect light, good airflow.

5. Samwise – Tillandsia ionantha clump

  • Mist lightly, keep in bright indirect light. Avoid water sitting in the base; leaves like to dry after misting.

6. Frodo – Callisia “Pink Panther” Miniature (2”)

  • Bright indoor light; water moderately. Keep slightly drier than summer.

7. Pippin – Sedeveria ‘Silver Frost’ (2”)

  • Treat like a succulent: minimal watering, just enough to prevent shriveling.

  • Keep cool, dry, bright—sunlight optional indoors.

8. Merry – Echeveria ‘Devotion’ (2”)

  • Same as Pippin; water sparingly. Echeverias thrive on dormancy in cooler months.

9–11. Boromir, Aragorn, Faramir – Peperomias (2”)

  • Bright indirect light.

  • Water sparingly; let top 1–2 inches of soil dry out.

  • Reduce humidity needs; they don’t need misting in winter.

12. Legolas – Neon Pothos (2”)

  • Low to medium light fine.

  • Water lightly—soil slightly moist, not wet.

  • Can handle average indoor humidity.

13. Beorn – Cotyledon Tomentosa Bear Paw (2”)

  • Succulent care: minimal watering.

  • Cool, dry spot indoors.

  • Bright indirect light is enough.

14. Saruman – Pothos ‘N Joy’ (2”)

  • Similar to Legolas.

  • Keep soil lightly moist; doesn’t need heavy watering.

15. Gimli – Haworthia fasciata (4”)

  • Bright indirect light.

  • Water lightly; keep cool and dry overall.

16. Arwen – String of Pearls (6”)

  • Let soil dry completely between waterings.

  • Keep bright but indirect; avoid cold drafts.

17. Denethor – Echeveria White Minima (2”)

  • Treat as Pippin/Merry: minimal watering, bright indirect light, cool.

18. Ugluk – Crassula ovata ‘Ogre’s Ears’ (4”)

  • Succulent dormancy: water only once or twice a month.

  • Bright light preferred; tolerate cooler indoor temps.

19. Eowyn – Sedum ‘Little Missy’ (2”)

22. Rosie – Hypoestes ‘Pink Splash’ (2”)

  • Bright indirect light keeps colors vivid.

  • Water lightly; reduce watering slightly in cooler months.

23. Precious – Sedum nussbaumerianum ‘Orange Delight’ (2”)

  • Treat like other succulents: minimal water, bright light indoors.

24. Radagast – Crassula sarmentosa ‘Comet’ (2”)
